Explanation for the selection of the signs Capricorn & Cancer as the respective signs of exaltation and debilation for Mars

The Zodiac itself is the Divine instruction of the Supreme Lord for ideal living whereas the planets signify different complexes which deviate a native from the ideal process through the bindings of Maya. Mars is the lord of the first sign Aries and the 8th sign Scorpio in the Zodiac. Life cycle starts in Aries and in this worldly life, every native has to do work, willingly or unwillingly, being obsessed by different complexes. This has been uttered by the Lord Shree Krishna in The Shreemadbhagabadgeeta “no body can remain idle even for a single moment since the natural instincts in a human being compel him to do work according to his inherent inclination” (Shreemadbhagabadgeeta, Chapter 3, Karmayoga, Shloka 5). To achieve the ends what are required are practical sense with a fixed target, servicing attitude, punctuality, adherence to discipline, without any desire for enjoying the results together with tremendous working energy, courage, capacity to take quick decision in any matter. Of these, the first three are the characteristics of the cardinal Tamasik earthy sign Capricorn and its lord Saturn and the latter are those of Mars. In the Zodiac, these two planets are described as bitter enemies to each other because Mars belongs to the creative group and Saturn to the destructive group. But for successful performance of any work are required punctuality, discipline, matured practical sense with a servicing outlook characterized by Saturn on the one hand and tremendous physical and mental strength together with courage to overcome any hindrance characterized by Mars on the other. Lack or deficiency of either of the two leads to failure either partially or totally. Again, the highest expression of human life is through activities. In the Zodiac, the start of life is signified in Aries ruled by Mars and as such the activities of human being in general are judged from the 10th sign Capricorn. Therefore, it is very natural that the characteristics of Mars are best expressed in Capricorn.
Again, as the lord of the 8th sign Scorpio; Mars signifies the store house of the experiences acquired through activities in each birth. The 3rd sign counted from Scorpio is Capricorn which means the characteristics of Scorpio are established through activities. So, from both considerations it is apparent that the sign Capricorn, inspite of being inimical for Mars permits best expression of Martial qualities and as such its designation as the sign of exaltation for Mars is quite justified.
Therefore, the opposite sign of Capricorn i.e. Cancer should be the sign of debilation for Mars because the cardinal Tamasik watery sign Cancer is opposing for Mars to express its qualities. The fire signified by Mars gets extinguished in the water signified by Cancer. Although, Mars in Cancer forming the fifth/tenth relation is Raj Yoga karaka, yet it does not help strengthening Mars.
Again, Mars being the military commander in the planetary kingdom is ever careful to protect the body. The fourth sign Cancer in the Zodiac signifies family and domestic happiness which are somewhat obstructive for performing the duties of Mars as ever awakened guard. So, consideration of all these factors naturally justifies the sign Cancer being described as the house of debilation for Mars.

Explanation for the selection of Taurus & Scorpio as the respective signs of exaltation and debilation of the Moon

The 2nd sign of the Zodiac is Taurus, fixed earthy sign of Rajas nature ruled by Venus. The sign is constituted of three/fourth quarters of the constellation Krittika owned by the Sun, the total four quarters of the constellation Rohini owned by the Moon and the half of the constellation Mrigashira owned by Mars. In Hindu Mythology it is said that Dakshha Prajapati got his twenty seven daughters married to the Moon. Of them all, Rohini was the best in all respects and the dearest of the husband Moon. For this reason, Moon used to come to Rohini more often then to the others. These caused the other twenty six wives of the Moon aggrieved and they lodged complaints to their father in this respect. But inspite of the instructions of the father Dakshha to behave equally to all the wives, Moon did not control himself as the result of which Moon became a victim of the disease consumption by the curse of Dakshha Prajapati. However, later he Moon became partially relieved of this curse by the good grace of Dakshha. The essence of this myth is that Moon becomes most powerful in Taurus. Moon is the significator of mind, domestic happiness, mental feelings, sensations, mother etc. Mind is the controller of all the activities of human being and this is the inherent cause of the life cycles in the terrestrial world. Moon is also the significator of liquids which always tend to move downwards which is also the characteristic of mind. As such, this down moving mind is controlled by Rajas nature leading to desires and passions for earthly pleasures and the sign Taurus, fixed earthy of Rajas nature and ruled by Venus is the center of all material happiness. Being the second sign of the Zodiac, it signifies accumulated wealth, ornaments etc. with which all material enjoyments can be had. Taurus is also the 11th sign i.e. the house of success counted from the sign Cancer which signifies that the naturally down moving mind finds its best success in material enjoyments. As such, the selection of Taurus as the sign of exaltation for Moon is quite justified.
Scorpio is the fixed watery sign of Rajas nature ruled by Mars of which it is the passive sign. Being the 8th sign of the Zodiac, it signifies death i.e. longevity, all secret affairs of body and mind including genetic organs, mysterious affairs, occult knowledge, Kula Kundalini Shakti etc. After death, mind along with the body gets destroyed but the ideas inscribed in the brain out of previous deeds remain existent in the soul. Therefore, the mind being abolished after death, it is very natural that the sign Scorpio be the house of debilation for Moon. The sign being fixed, the ever changing mind during life time remains at rest here after death. The sign Cancer is cardinal watery of Tamas nature comparable to the waves of the ocean. The fifth sign counted from Cancer is Scorpio where the mind finds itself at rest i.e. in this sign the natural traits of the Moon are destroyed thus justifying this sign as the house of debilation of the Moon.

Explanation for the selection of Aries & Libra as the respective houses of exaltation and debilation of the Sun

The sign Aries signifying the start of life cycle in the terrestrial world is cardinal, fiery and Tamasik in nature ruled by Mars. In our solar system, the origin of creation is the Sun, the source of the vitality and life energy. Sun signifies brain, soul, origin the entire nerve system, consciousness etc. Aries being the 1st sign of the Zodiac ruled by Mars signifies head, active energy, strong desire to express the self etc. Therefore, it is quite natural that the characteristics of the Sun will be best expressed in the sign Aries of concordant nature. Again, Sun transits the sign Aquarius in the Bengali month Vaishakha when the Sun shines severe. Again, the lord of the sign Aries is Mars which is designated as the military personnel in the planetary kingdom which is the significator of youth whereas the Sun is described as being middle-aged. Therefore, in order to propagate the knowledge, glory, valour, spiritedness etc. of the Sun, the young planet Mars is fittest and since Mars attains its active for in Aries, the sign of exaltation of the Sun is naturally ascribed to the same.
The 7th sign of the Zodiac is Libra, cardinal airy sign of Tamas nature and the active field of its ruler Venus. In the 7th house are judged spouse, desires, attachment to material happiness, lust, total environment etc. Sun is the significator of vital energy, knowledge of the Self, soul, consciousness etc. Therefore, engagement in the environment or physical pleasures automatically leads to destruction of life energy, degradation of consciousness and creation of a Tamasik shield over the soul i.e. in tremendous Tamasik air current, the vital energy of body and the sense of consciousness are destroyed. Therefore, Libra is described as the sign of debilation for the Sun.
Again, due to excessive physical pleasures in contact with the spouse, the creative seed of the native becomes weak or lost. Again, Sun being the origin of the creation has in itself knowledge of Self, Sacred Love etc. but in the active field of the destructive planet Venus i.e. in the sign Libra, the Sacred Love is turned into Tamasik lust which becomes obstacle to attain self realization. As such, the selection of Libra as the sign of debilation of the Sun is quite justified.

Explanation for the selection of Saturn as the lord of the signs Capricorn and Aquarius

In a natal chart, the 10th house signifies job, employment etc. The 10th sign in the Zodiac is Capricorn, cardinal earthy sign of Tamas nature ruled by Saturn which is described as hermit or Yogi on the one hand and servant on the other. In the terrestrial world, work is done by the living beings on the material plane. As such, the 10th sign being described to be earthy is quite justified. Ordinary people do work for self interest under the complexes which give rise to many faults and errors because of many opposing ideas which are the characteristics of Tamas nature. Again, Saturn is by nature servant and hermit and since according to Hindu Philosophy for being freed from all complexes forming chains of deeds encircling a native, it is necessary is to perform one’s jobs without any expectations for results; therefore, the lordship of the 10th sign Capricorn is very rightly ascribed to Saturn. Moreover, in Astrology, Saturn is said to be the significator of “Time”. Again, to perform a successful work what are required are punctuality, sincerity, law-abiding tendency and materialistic matured sense, the last one being usually acquired through experience. Since Saturn is designated as the very old planet in Astrology, therefore the selection of Saturn as the lord of the 10th sign Capricorn is quite justified.
The 11th sign of the Zodiac is Aquarius, fixed airy sign of Rajas nature. From the 11th house in a natal chart are judged income, success, friend (being enemy of enemy signified by the 6th house). The 2nd house counted from the 10th house is the 11th house i.e. the accumulated wealth of work is signified by the 11th house. Since the 10th sign Capricorn being ruled by Saturn signifies work of servicing nature without any expectation of results, therefore in the material world it leads to accumulation of money i.e. income and in the level of consciousness the airy sign Aquarius signifies highest expression of intelligence and spiritual thoughts which on the one hand results in the development of materialistic philosophy and on the other hand signifies the concentrated mind of a hermit to attain gradually the higher levels of spiritualism.
In the planetary kingdom Saturn is the significator of both these characteristics. The 3rd house counted from the 9th sign Saggitarius is Aquarius which means valour of wisdom of Saggitarius is the spiritual consciousness of Aquarius which is also the 6th house signifying the enmity of the 6th sign Virgo signifying complexes. The 8th sign from Cancer is Aquarius which means the unbound emotion of the cardinal Tamasik watery sign Cancer finds its annihilation in Aquarius. Further, the seed of creation in Leo remains latent here. As such, the selection of Saturn as the lord of the 11th sign Aquarius is also totally justified.

In Palmistry difference of both palms and their relations with the natal chart and the Zodiac

In Astrology, the Zodiac represents the God-directed course of life to be followed by the mankind in general while the stellar bodies related with the Zodiac in our solar system signify the different impacts of various complexes on human being which compel the native to act accordingly. The natal chart of an individual signifies the results of the deeds in previous incarnations to be enjoyed by the native in the present birth while the phases and the sub-phases of different planets signify the portions of these accumulated activity results to be effected on the native in this birth. Together with these, the contemporary planetary transits at different times influence the native to act in their own directions, the results of which are to be enjoyed by the native partly in the present birth and the rest in subsequent incarnations. This continues in successive births till the native becomes free from all complexes and acquires self realization and thereby reunites with the origin i.e. the Supreme Soul. In such situation he no longer becomes the prey to the complexes; rather he acquires control and mastery over this.
The Zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts, each part being termed a sign which have been divided into four groups on the basis of the four elements constituting this universe remaining in the fifth element i.e. space. This classification is as follows:

Fire                              Earth                           Air                              Water
Aries                            Taurus                         Gemini                         Cancer
Leo                              Virgo                           Libra                           Scorpio
Saggitarius                  Capricorn                     Aquarius                      Pisces

Again, on the basis of inherent nature, the twelve signs have been divided into three groups as follows:

Cardinal                                              Fixed                                       Mutable
Aries                                                   Taurus                                     Gemini
Cancer                                                Leo                                         Virgo
Libra                                                   Scorpio                                   Saggitarius
Capricorn                                            Aquarius                                 Pisces

The four elements composing the Zodiac signify four planes of consciousness. The earthy signs signify the crude material level, the fiery signs signify the lively plane, the watery signs signify the psychic plane while the airy signs signify the level of highest consciousness i.e. of wisdom. Therefore, each tried of signs composed of the same element contains one sign of the three natures as have been classified above.
The cardinal signs signify changing life and mentality; the fixed signs signify steady, disciplined and undeviated life course and mentality while the mutable signs signify an intermediate stage between these two. Further, the twelve signs have been classified into two groups depending on gender. The male signs include the odd ones viz. Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Saggitarius and Aquarius while the rest six i.e. the even signs are said to form the female group.
In the Zodiac, the Sun and the Moon rule over one sign each viz. Leo and Cancer respectively. Since, for the creation and becoming of life on the earth the functions of the Sun and the Moon are most important, therefore these two signs have been allotted the adjacent positions viz. the fourth and the fifth in the Zodiac. The other planets viz. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn which represent different complexes have been allotted two signs each. Thus, Mars rules over the fiery sign Aries and the watery sign Scorpio. Venus rules over the earthy sign Taurus and the airy sign Libra. Similarly, Mercury rules over the airy sign Gemini and the earthy sign Virgo while Jupiter rules over the fiery sign Saggitarius and the watery sign Pisces and lastly Saturn is the lord of earthy sign Capricorn and the airy sign Aquarius. It is to be noted that the elements required for creation of life viz. fire and water are controlled by the planets viz. Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter which are said to be creative in nature while the others viz. Mercury, Venus and Saturn termed as belonging to the destructive group representing the elements the earth and the air which constitute the final remains of the living body after death. These classifications also indicate that of the two signs ruled by any planet the male sign belongs to the active group while the female sign to the passive group. Since, during night time, Moon performs the function of Sun to many extents, as such Moon is said to be the female form of Sun i.e. Moon may be considered as the passive form of Sun. Therefore, the seed of creation symbolized in the Zodiac lies in the signs Leo and Cancer signifying the elements fire and water respectively ruled by the Sun and the Moon in order. On scrutiny, it will be revealed that of the signs ruled by the remaining five planets, the active ones are the odd or male signs and the passive ones are the even or female signs. Its inner significance is that the complexes signified by each planet find their fields of application in the odd signs while those of retention in the respective even signs.
In the natal chart, the Ascendant and its lord, the Ascendant-Navamsa and its lord indicate the native and his mentality gained through deeds in previous incarnations and also a line of indication of the future. Moon signifies the mind, mother, inheritance from the maternal side etc. while Sun signifies the plane of consciousness wherefrom the native has descended and also the father and the characteristics earned through the paternal side. These three combinedly control all the characteristics and activities of the native in the present birth. When a departed soul desires to be born again in order to satisfy the unfulfilled desires in previous births, the soul takes recourse to some parents having mentality in the plane in which the departed soul exists. In such a case, the Ascendant and its lord, the Moon and the Sun are in mutually cooperating relation so that the native in this birth can express properly the characteristics inherited from the parents with the help of the ideas carried by the native from previous births so that the native can ascend to higher levels gradually. But if these three are related in the natal chart in adverse mode, their characteristics are in mutual confliction so that the soul instead of ascending descends to a lower level.
The phases and the sub-phases in the natal chart signify the portions of the accumulated deeds in previous births which the native has to enjoy in the present incarnation and the time thereof. Together with this, is added the effects of contemporary planetary transits some part of which is to be enjoyed by the native in the present birth and the rest kept reserved for future incarnations.
In some definite place and time if a number of natives be born who are termed as astrological twins because of having exactly identical in all respect the natal charts, their courses of life although similar but differ in degrees because of the difference in the inherent energy of the souls which determine the degrees of achievement of each individual native. This is comparable to the well known principle of Thermodynamics in Physics in which the internal energy which any particle or body possesses of because of its very existence and although identical in all other respects, two bodies or molecules must differs in their internal energy content.
The relation of the natal chart with the palm of the concerned native is now considered. It has already been mentioned before that the Zodiac alone signifies the God-directed course of life to be followed by the mankind in general for ideal living and consequently to arrive at the Supreme Goal i.e. attainment of godhood but under the influence of the different stellar bodies related with the Zodiac, various complexes compel the native to follow different life pattern far apart from the ideal course which is reflected in the palm of the native. The significance of the natal chart in all aspects has already been discussed. These features are written in the palm in the language of Palmistry in the active hand of the individual whereas the other hand signifies the same earned through both parents in life.
The relation of the active hand with the natal chart is now being discussed. Like the classification of the twelve signs in the Zodiac in four groups depending on the element concerned, the palm is also classified in four groups based on the four elements as follows: 1. Earthy Group or Practical Hand, 2. Fiery Group or Working Hand, 3. Watery Group or Psychic Hand and 4. Airy Group or Philosophic Hand. Again, a palm controlled by active or male sign in termed as irregular shaped while the one influenced by passive or female sign is termed regular shaped. Depending on the harshness of the skin, palms are divided into three categories in relation to the three classes of signs as follows: soft hand related with cardinal signs, harsh hand related with fixed signs and the intermediate ones related with mutable signs.
However, in practice, palm of a single element only is very rare in these days because due to admixture of blood by virtue of marriage not following the principles of compatibility, the relations of the Ascendants and their lords, Moon signs and the Sun signs between any pair in most cases are not harmonious. In the palms, these are reflected in the non-harmonious nature of elements making the palm of mixed nature. For example, it is very difficult for a native to succeed in life having palm composed of water and fire elements which are contradictory to each other and so also the case for palm of earth and air elements. Further, success of a native is also influenced having in the palm mounts of different planets, their inclinations, position of respective apex points, different symbol on the mounts and particularly the nature of the middle portion of the palm, characteristics of the palm skin, length of the fingers in comparison to the palm length, nature and position of the thumb, color of the palm, nature and depth of the lines, other symbols etc. in keeping with the different factors which are taken into account in judging a natal chart.
In the natal chart, the fifth house counted from the Ascendant signifies intelligence, talent, capability of expressing the self while the tenth house signifies the degree of achievement of the native in the present birth. Of the two hands of the native, the active one signifies the ability of the native while the passive one signifies the characteristics gained through the parents by heredity which are signified in the natal chart by the position and strength of the different planets with respect to the Sun and the Moon while the fingers indicate the degree of achievements of the different qualities of the native and also the plane of consciousness in which these traits will be manifested such as material, psychic or practical level which in the natal chart are determined by the nature of element to which the related planet is posted in the natal chart and also in the Navamsha chart. Therefore, these traits of the palm are very similar to those judged from the fifth and the tenth houses and their lords together with the Navamshas and their lords of the respective planet.
The most important planet in the natal chart is termed as the controller since it controls the entire course of life of the native. In addition, another term “fortune-controller” is also vogue which is the lord of the sign in which the ninth lord is situated in the natal chart. In the palm, the planet in the field of which the longest finger is attached and other fingers are inclined to that finger is the controller of the palm. In general, it is the middle finger controlled by Saturn is the longest one. Although, the bases of the fingers are not usually along the same plane but while measuring the length these bases should be observed taking the bases at level. In this way, the planet in the field of which the finger appearing to be the longest or very close to the middle finger should be taken as the controller of the palm. Together with this, the inclination of the majority of the fingers should be observed which will indicate the planet determining the course of life of the native.
Next comes for consideration the thumb which is extremely important in Palmistry. In a natal chart, the angles and the trines signify the health, environment, general ability of the native, the fortune acquired through the deeds performed by the native in previous births and the capability of the native to utilize the environmental contributions to manifests these in the life are judged from the four Upachaya places. The third house and its lord together with the third sign Gemini and its lord Mercury signify common-sense and individual efforts. For this, the Ascendant and its lord together with the Navamsha and its lord and Mars should be taken into account in respect of strength. In the natal chart, the efforts, courage, valour etc. are judged from the third house and its lord together with the sign Gemini and its ruler Mercury. Gemini is dual, Sattwik and airy sign and the active field of the ruler Mercury. Its implication is that the actual strength of an individual is the Sattwik and transparent analytical mind and reasoning faculty but Mercury being the child planet and the sign Gemini dual and Sattwik natured signifies an oscillating nature of mentality which tries to reduce the strength to some extent, however small. But the strength of this individual valour lays in the third house counted from the third house i.e. the fifth house in the natal chart which in the Zodiac is the sign Leo, the fixed fiery sign of Rajas nature and ruled by the Sun. Sun is the significator of soul energy and will force while the success of the courage and strength is to be judged from the eleventh house counted from the third house i.e. the Ascendant itself which signifies the basic nature, health, mentality etc. The active field of Mars is the sign Aries, cardinal and Tamasik fiery sign and also the sign of exaltation for Sun. Mars is exalted in the tenth sign Capricorn ruled by Saturn where its unbounded will force and Tamasik activity are best manifested.
In the palm, the thumb is the significator of individual effort, courage, valour etc which is therefore the controller to manifest the characteristics of the palm in the life. The thumb is composed of two parts, the upper part signifies will force and the lower one the rationality, intelligence etc. According to Oriental Palmistry, Ketu and Rahu respectively rule over the upper and the lower halves of the thumb. Ketu signifies the will force because it is itself the significator of the coiled soul energy. Rahu on the other hand also the significator of material enjoyments and unbounded greed is said to be exalted in Gemini which, therefore, gives the good results of Rahu while the sign of exaltation for Ketu is said to be the sign Saggitarius manifesting the best functions of Ketu. Further, Ketu rules over the sign Scorpio signifying coiled self energy and therefore the sign Taurus ruled by Rahu provides the maximum material prospects in life because the ruler of Taurus is Venus which is the Master of the Demon Rahu is the significator of scientific nature as well as the discipline of law which is also signified by Mercury ruling over the signs Gemini and Virgo.
Therefore, it implies that the actual courage and effort depend on the Sattwik rationality and irresistible will force which combinedly effort the native with the success in life. If the angle between the thumb and the forefinger be less then 900, the native will have a narrow mentality and on the other hand if the angle be 900 or more, the native will be liberal and broad-minded. A strong Moon signifies liberalism but at the same time a changing mind while a weak Moon makes the native narrow and fickle minded. In addition, if the third, fourth and fifth house or houses in the natal chart and/or the signs Gemini, Cancer and Leo be related with Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus the native will be broad-minded. But relation of Saturn with these houses or signs makes the native narrow minded. Relation of Rahu with these affords the native with a reverse mentality compared to others while a relation with Ketu makes the native heartless and lacking in intelligence. Relation of Mars although makes broad-minded but at the same time makes harsh and impatient unless weak or afflicted by malefics.
If the thumb is firm and non-flexible, the native will be obstinate lacking in rationality. On the contrary, a too much flexible thumb indicates lacking in personality and the native will be easily influenced by others. Such natives although very adjustable with the surroundings but having no personality will be neglected in the surroundings. The optimum condition is a fairly flexible thumb, the owner of which can adjust with the surroundings maintaining his own views and personality and for this he will be appreciated in society. In the natal chart, it is signified by the benefic impact of the Sun and/or Jupiter and/or Venus on the third house or the sign Gemini which is Sattwik, dual in nature thereby pointing to the desire of the Supreme Lord to have this adjustable Sattwik mentality. But if the third house be related with Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu and the same be fixed in nature like Taurus, the native will be very obstinate and self-willed leaving no room for other’s opinion.
Generally, the tip of the thumb should be extended up to the middle of the third phalanx of the fore finger whereby the self efforts or Purushokar as it is called becomes normal but a smaller thumb than this indicates lacking in efforts while a longer one signifies its excessiveness although the same may not be fruitful in every case.
The third house and/or its lord and/or the sign Gemini and/or its lord Mercury if related with benefics and not afflicted by malefics, the native’s efforts will be normal but in case of affliction by malefics the same will be below normal or non-effective. The third house and/or its lord and/or the sign Gemini if related with Jupiter or Venus, the native’s efforts will be normal; if related with Mars the same will be excessive and quick acting without proper reasoning; if related with Rahu the same may become a shameless self publicity. In such case, the thumb will be of club-shaped and the native will have an inclination towards unlawful activities. A relation of the third house with Ketu will make the native idle or lacking in self effort but mentally he will be diplomatic. In such case, the thumb may have some physical abnormality or deformation.
The finger length in the palm signifies the extent of manifestation of the characteristics of the planet related with the relevant zone. Normally, the middle finger of the palm is longest which indicates that the native will be mostly involved in materialistic thoughts and activities in life which is the order of the life today. Since, Saturn is the significator of such life style therefore if the course of life is not controlled in the good direction but influenced by the evil planets like Rahu, the characteristics of the related zone will be maximum manifested in life. But if the third house and/or its lord together with the sign Gemini and its lord Mercury be afflicted by malefics, the native’s efforts will be rather ineffective in most cases due to hypocrisy. In case of relation with Rahu with these, the results are not good for the native and due to excessiveness of such traits; ultimately the native will have to suffer from this.
Besides the thumb, the other fingers are divided into three phalanxes each. The phalanx adjacent with the palm signifies the manifestation in the material world of the characteristics signified by the relevant zone of the palm. The middle phalanx signifies the practical applications of the same while the top phalanx signifies the expression of the characteristics in the higher level of consciousness. The phalanx most powerful in a finger expresses the characteristics of the relevant planet in that level. In the natal chart, the same will be reflected by the position and strength of the corresponding planet in the sign concerned and or its Navamsha in respect of element and other traits of the same. Thus, if it be earthy in nature the characteristics of the relevant planet will be manifested in the purely material level; if the same be airy in nature its expression will be in commercial or intellectual level and for watery element, the same will be in the psychic level.
A keen observation of the fingers reveals that one or more of the fingers remain inclined to some particular one which in the present era is normally the middle finger owned by Saturn because this era is mostly controlled by materialistic ideas. The significance of such inclination is that the characteristics of the inclined finger will be influenced by those of the other. In the natal chart, it is indicated by the relation of the planets signified by these two fingers either by association or aspect. In case of a number of planets influencing a particular one, the most powerful planet will be the ruler and in that case to the concerned finger, the other finger will remain inclined. In case the concerned planet has no finger of its own, such inclination will be to the finger ruled by the planet of the same group.
A scrutiny of the palm fingers draws attention in two respects. Starting from the fore finger and ending at the little finger the respective regions are ruled by Jupiter, Saturn, Sun and Mercury in order. Of these, Jupiter and Sun belong to the creative group while Saturn and Mercury to the destructive group. Again, in the Zodiac Jupiter and Saturn rule over the last four signs whereas the signs ruled by Saturn and Mercury are in the first half of the Zodiac and situated adjacently taking the sign Cancer ruled by Moon as the substitute for Sun because it acts like Sun to some extent during the night time. The significance of the first observation is that the acts of creation and destruction are continued simultaneously which is also evident from the fact that in the palm the regions of Sun and Saturn are side-by-side as also the respective fingers. For example, in the Zodiac the sign opposite to Aquarius, the active field of Saturn is Leo ruled by the Sun whereas that opposite to Capricorn, the passive field of Saturn is Cancer ruled by Moon. Again, in the palm the finger adjacent to the ring finger is the significator of Mercury and that adjacent to the middle finger signifies Jupiter. Its significance is that the manifestation of brain activity which is the origin of the nerve system takes place in the intellectual plane. On the other hand, the wisdom and the concept of immortality of the soul originate from the knowledge of the mortal material world and therefore the regions signifying intellect and wisdom are situated on two extreme ends. In the Zodiac, it is apparent from the location of the two signs ruled by Mercury at the opposite signs ruled by Jupiter.
Again, the region on the palm said to the ruled by Venus in the Western Palmistry is designated as being ruled by Moon in the Oriental Palmistry and so also is with the reverse case. An analysis of classification of planets in the Zodiac establishes the oriental idea as being correct; because the region below that ruled by Jupiter in the palm should naturally belong to Moon which is a member of the creative group and from this region and the line demarcating the region signifies health, longevity, sensitivity etc. which all belong to the functions of Moon. On the contrary, Mercury and Venus belonging to the destructive group should rule over the regions under the same line. Therefore, it is clear that the fore finger signifies the functions of Jupiter and Moon whereas the little finger signifies those of Mercury and Venus.
Another system of classification of palm is with respect to the nature of the fingers viz. plain and knotty which is the indicator of the difference in mentality. The first one signifies a native who is liberal, thinks of greatness and likes to make an overall view of any matter instead of going into the details analytically. The positive side of this is that such a native is broad-minded and patient but its negative side is that due to overlooking the details, many defects remain outside the view which creates many problems in the native’s life. On the contrary, the knotty hand makes the native viewing any matter analytically from different angles which although protects him from material loss but makes him unhappy in practical life and makes him irritating and disgusting to others. Therefore, extremes of both types become the source of unhappiness for the native and therefore an optimum level is one intermediate between the two.
For a plain hand, the impacts of Sun, Jupiter and strong Moon either singly or combinedly become most prominent. It has also been seen that the fingers of a plain hand become knotty with age of the native. The reason behind this is that Saturn which is designated as old planet and significator of life long experiences become more effective with age of the native and therefore the palm also terns to some extent knotty although the origin of characteristics of the plain hand is not lost.
If Mercury or Saturn or both be situated in earthy sign in the natal chart and the palm is knotty, the location of the knots will be at the base of the finger signifying material manifestation. But if they are situated in airy signs their manifestation will be effective in the world of thoughts. If in the natal chart, planets of both types are strong, the native’s palm at the early age will be mostly plain having some knots which will not be very effective at this age but with growing age due to various interactions in life, the influence of Saturn increases making the knots more prominent although the characteristics of plain hand will not be totally lost. On the other hand, if in the natal chart, the Ascendant and its lord, the Ascendant Navamsha and its lord, the Moon and the Sun be influenced mostly by Saturn, the native’s palm from the very early age will have prominent knots and this result in narrow-mindedness in the native even in early ages. Such native however may develop some broad-mindedness in later life. In such cases, it is seen that due to sufferings originating from the narrow-mindedness caused by Saturn, the native reforms himself under the influence of strong Jupiter by exhibiting liberalism although the basic nature of knotty hand is not totally lost.
The next matter of consideration is the color of the palm related with the natal chart. This color depends on blood circulation of the body. For a normal circulation through lungs and arteries in the human body the color becomes pink. In case of excess R.B.C., the color will be reddish and for the deficiency of the same it will be pale white. In case of excess biles mixed with blood, the color will be yellow. For abnormal function of lungs causing deficiency in oxygen supply, the color will be black. For disturbed function of kidneys, the color will be bluish. Now, the relation of planetary position in the natal chart with the palm color is analyzed.
Blood is composed of watery part and R.B.C. Moon rules over the watery part together with the three watery signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Significator of R.B.C. is Mars with its two signs Aries and Scorpio. The cardinal fiery sign Aries is the active field of Mars while the fixed watery sign Scorpio is its passive field. Since, Mars is significator of fire its active field is Aries while Scorpio being fixed watery sign is its passive field. The sign Cancer ruled by Moon is in a trine-angular relation with these two signs of Mars. As such, Mars in Cancer forms the Raj Yoga although the element of Cancer being antagonistic to that of Mars, the latter becomes debilated in Cancer. If in the natal chart, Moon and Mars be strong and form a benefic aspect, the proportion of R.B.C. and W.B.C. of blood becomes harmonious making the color pink. The native of such a palm has a balanced and attractive nature because the mother-like softness, sympathy and affection signified by Moon and mixed with spiritedness, valour, liberalism and malehood of Mars awards the native with the same. Such a native is the source of inspiration to others but if Mars be relatively stronger, the color will be reddish making the native harsh, egoistic, power-monger, tyrant in nature and will cause sufferings from brain disease, migraine, weakness of heart, accident proneness etc. If Mars be relatively weak, blood will be deficient in R.B.C. causing the palm color pale whitish making the native ideal, imaginative, devoid of valour etc. If Mars and/or Moon be afflicted by malefics, the native will be envious, mean natured and clod blooded criminal, of course if the other features of the palm and the thumb be adverse.
In case of blood having excess of biles, the color will be yellow and the native will be of suspicious nature, short tempered, non-adjustable with others. The reason underlying this is that the above mentioned traits are of Saturn which is a bitter enemy for Moon and Mars and therefore an affliction be Saturn of the Ascendant, Moon or Mars causes the blood bilious.
If the native has defects of kidney, the blood is not purified properly and as the result the color of the palm and particularly the region below the thumb and ruled by Moon according to Oriental Palmistry becomes bluish which results in gradual decrease of vital energy of life and serious kidney defects. In the natal chart, it is signified chiefly by the position, strength and impact of other planet on Venus. If the Venus and the sign Libra be strong and unafflicted by malefics, the native will be mostly freed from kidney problems but in case if either or both of the two be afflicted by malefics, the native becomes a victim of kidney problems.
If the lungs are not supplied with adequate oxygen blood is not purified properly making the color black. Such a native will have a brutal mentality and for self interest he can adopt any sort of unfair means. If with this the nature of the palm be rough and the thumb be little and club-like, the native’s mentality will be brutal and totally anti-social. In the natal chart, lungs are judged from the third house which in the Zodiac is the Sattwik and dual airy sign Gemini ruled by Mercury. This signifies the respiratory process, Sattwik valour, child-like simplicity, scientific inquisitiveness etc. Being dual in nature this sign signifies the two simultaneous reversible process of respiration. If the third house or the sign Gemini be afflicted by malefics like Mars, Saturn or Rahu, the normal respiratory process will be disturbed causing the color to be black. Relation of Rahu in particular with the third house or Gemini makes the native brutal with excessive expressions of demonic nature. If with this Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter etc. be related, the native may take recourse to any anti-social activity to satisfy the complexes. In such a case, the native will be hypocrite and anti-religion in nature. Relation of Ketu with the ninth house makes the native indifferent towards religious matters and having some malicious outlook. But the third house being the eighth house from the eighth also signifies death. Further, third house is the first Upachaya place causing the activity of Rahu in this position more aggravated. The inherent significance of such planetary dispositions causing the black color of palm is that the native even if be the owner of huge wealth remains unhappy and his ends are not happy.
In both Oriental and Western Palmistry, there is no difference of opinion in respect of the fields of the four planets viz. Jupiter, Saturn, Sun and Mercury. But the region below the thumb is allotted to Venus in western opinion while in the oriental opinion it has been allotted to Moon. The reverse is the case for the region below the little finger and slightly above the palm base. Strength of any field is judged from the height of the mount above the normal level. If in the natal chart, a planet is strong in lordship and different Vargas and particularly the Navamsha, the mount will be high and the reverse is the case with the weakness of the planet in the above respects. In the rough hand, the results of the fields of the planets differ from those of a soft hand. Again, if the tip of the mount is in the middle of the region or nearby, the complete effects of the fields are resulted but if the tip is adjacent to some end, the effect will be lessened. In the natal chart, it is reflected by the position of the planets in the Bhava Chakra. The nearer the planet towards the middle point of the Bhava, the more is the effect and when it coincides exactly with the mid point, the effect is maximum whereas the further is the planet from the middle point, the lesser will be the effect and when it coincides with the junction point of the two Bhavas, no effect of the Bhava is resulted but only the effect of position of the planet in the concerned sign is obtained. Again in the palm, if a field be inclined to another, the effect of first Bhava will be influenced by the second one. In the natal chart, it is reflected by the strength of the lord and the constellation of the sign in which the planet is situated and the strength of the other planet making aspect with the concerned one. Another point to be noted is that the color of the palm in general although of particular nature, but some times the color of some particular regions may be different. It depends in the natal chart on the strength of the planet and on those making different aspects on it and particularly the relation between Moon and Mars.
The regions ruled by the four different planets in order in the palm and the two attached to the base are divided into some parts. The region between the heart line and the head line as designated in Western Palmistry is allotted to Mars. The portion below the mount of Jupiter of this region is allotted to Neptune and designated as the passive field of Mars in Western Palmistry and that below the mount of Mercury of this region is allotted to Uranus and termed as active field of Mars in western opinion and the region in between these two is termed as the plane of Mars. Besides, the region between the head line and the life line is termed as the field of earth in oriental opinion or the Ascendant which is extremely important in making judgments because the inhabitance of the earth, its effect is maximum on the mankind. This is reflected in the natal chart as the Ascendant being considered as the most important. In the natal chart, if the Ascendant, its lord, its Navamsha and the lord thereof be not strong enough, the other planetary effects however strong can not afford total effects because these factors which signify the health, the basic nature and the total personality of the native form the base of the prospect of life. In the palm also if the region of earth is hollow, the native can not achieve its total success. Further, inspite of having all these factors in the palm powerful, if the palm color is not benefic i.e. pink, the native can not achieve the full success because the color which depends on the blood circulation of the body is controlled by the relative position and strength of the Moon and the Mars in the natal chart. Moon signifying mind and its strength, firmness and Mars signifying physical and mental strength, activity, initiative etc. are extremely important to arrive at the target of life. Therefore, in fine it may be concluded that if the color of the palm and the field of earth thereon are not benefic, the native can not attain success in life.
The real significance of the lines in the palm is the manifestation of the effects of the region through which the lines progress. In every palm usually four chief lines are visible which divide the planet into four parts. The two lines viz. the heart and the head lines divide the palm horizontally while the fate line and the life line divide the same vertically. Of these four, the fate line in many palms does not exist and the life line is in many cases small. In many palms, these two horizontal lines coincide into one and in some cases their lengths are not very large. These two horizontal lines are oppositely directed in the palm and so is also the case with the two vertical lines. The heart line or the line of wisdom as designated in oriental opinion starts below the mount of Mercury and crossing the fields of Sun and Saturn usually ends on the mount of Jupiter although in many cases the length may be different. Conversely, the head line or line of energy termed in Oriental Palmistry starts below the fore finger near the passive field of Mars and crossing the field of Saturn and Sun it terminates below the mount of Mercury or in the field of Venus. The significance of the first case is that the ideas carried by the soul of the native from previous births which remains stored in the field of Mercury in the form of memory when combined with the experiences of activities in the present birth are converted into wisdom reflected by the region of Jupiter wherein it terminates and at the time of death these are all combinedly carried by the soul and when the native takes the next birth these are again reflected in the region of Mercury. These combined ideas of previous births inspire the native into activities which are exhibited in the present birth by the head line or line of energy which starts below the mount of Jupiter in the field of Neptune and gaining the experiences out of the activities of the present birth reflected by the progress of the head line through the region of Saturn are inscribed in the brain reflected by the field of Sun and converted into stored memories in the field of Mercury where the head line normally terminates.
Again of the two vertical lines, the first one i.e. the fate line usually starts from the base of the palm and gradually moves upwards terminates at different zones depending on the accumulated results of previous deeds. In some cases this line does not exist at all. The second vertical line termed as the life line in Western palmistry and as the line of sensitivity in Oriental Palmistry starts from somewhere of the passive field of Mars below the mount of Jupiter and moving downwards ends at the base or nearby region although in some cases it may end much above. The significance of the tracks of the two lines is that the fate line indicates the active efforts of the native and the help from the environment towards gradual improvement of the individual soul towards the end which depends on the plane of existence of the soul in the present birth and the plane to which the deeds of the present birth will take the native. The second vertical line i.e. the life line starting from the passive field of Mars down the mount of Jupiter and encircles the region of Moon in a curved way and ends at the base or nearby region. The significance of this line confirms the justification of the enclosed region being allotted to Moon because it actually indicate the different feelings of the native due to various interactions of life and also the physical nutrition which are the traits of Moon.
The head line and the heart line as termed in western opinion are in face complimentary to each other. The heart line staring below the field of Mercury ends below that of Jupiter or nearby region while for the head line, the reverse is the picture. The underlying significance is that experiences of the accumulated deeds in previous births are stored the present birth in the brain of the native in the region of memory which are controlled by the Sun and Mercury. To this is added the experiences derived from the activities of the present birth which are signified by Saturn and subsequently converted into wisdom of the native signified by the region of Jupiter according to the nature of the native in this birth. And this wisdom is manifested in the subsequent birth as common-sense and in the next birth this wisdom induces the native to activities which are expressed by the head line in the present birth. Therefore, the start of the head line below the mount of Jupiter in the region of Neptune or nearby because Neptune is the significator of occult knowledge and mysterious affairs. The head line thereafter moves through the experiences derived from different interactions in the present birth and stored in the brain signified by the field of Sun and subsequently converted into memory signified by Mercury which in the next birth takes the form of heart line in the opposite direction starting with inherent common-sense derived from experiences of previous births.
The explanations of the above ideas in a natal chart are now being submitted. In the natal chart, the ninth house signifies the wisdom derived from experiences of previous births which in the Zodiac is the sign Saggitarius ruled by Jupiter. The second house signifying the accumulated results starting from Saggitarius is the sign Capricorn while the third sign i.e. Aquarius signifies the strength of this wisdom. Saturn is the lord of both these signs and therefore the results of deeds in the present births are manifested in the third sign counted from Aquarius i.e. the sign Aries which being the first sign of the Zodiac is the Ascendant signifying the brain controlled by Sun. These are manifested through the nerve system in the form of memory which are expressed as common-sense in the subsequent birth which is controlled by Mercury. Therefore the course of the head line starting somewhere below the mount of Jupiter and crossing over the field of Saturn and Sun in succession ends in the field of Mercury in conformity with the significance of the signs of the Zodiac.
The course of the heart line is just opposite although in some cases the line being short terminates at early stage. The underlying significance of this is that the results of the deeds in previous births are accumulated in the brain of the native which the concerned soul takes away when departing from the body after death. In the next birth the soul has is awarded with these in his storage of memory signified by Mercury and Sun. Therefore, the head line starts from the field of Mercury and crosses over the field of Sun and to this are added the experiences of the different interactions in the present birth which enrich the store of wisdom of the native in the present birth. Therefore, the course of the heart line ends in the field of Jupiter signifying the wisdom. In case there is little or no scope for gaining experiences of different activities in the present birth, the length of the heart line is not very large, an argument also equally applicable for the head line as well. Therefore, according to Oriental Palmistry, for the judgment of longevity, the head line and the heart line are also to be taken into account in addition to the life line quite justifiably.
Now, the course of heart line is being analyzed in terms of Astrology. The present birth of a soul is taken at the first point of Aries. Therefore, the strength of the native is judged from the third house i.e. the sign Gemini which is the seventh house counted from Saggitarius which signifies the wisdom carried from the previous births which is manifested as common-sense, inquisitiveness, the interest to learn the world signified by the third sign Gemini. The strength of this common-sense lies in the third sign counted from Gemini i.e. in Leo ruled by the Sun which signifies the brain, heart, intelligence, talent etc. The activities of the present birth are judged from the tenth sign Capricorn and the results gained thereof are judged from the second house from Capricorn which is the Rajasik, fixed, airy sign Aquarius ruled by Saturn. The death of the native is signified by the eighth sign Scorpio which indicates that in the passive field of Mars signified by the head are stored secretly this ideas because Scorpio is the eighth sign of the Zodiac. Again, the intelligence and talent in the present birth as carried from the previous births are signified by the fifth sign Leo wherefrom the fourth sign signifying the rest house i.e. Scorpio signifies the stored experiences after death. To this being added the experiences gained from activities in the present birth enrich the storage of wisdom which is manifested in the subsequent births in the second sign from Scorpio i.e. Saggitarius which is the ninth sign signifying fortune in the present birth. Again, fifth sign counted from Scorpio is Pisces which signifies the outcome of the experiences gained in previous births and being the twelfth sign of the Zodiac signifies Moksha which lead the native to final reunion of the individual soul with the Supreme Soul. Thus, the course of the heart line in relation to the different sign of the Zodiac is quite justified.
Now, the courses of the two vertical lines in the palms and the related significance in the Zodiac are considered. The life line as termed in Western Palmistry and line of sensitivity in Oriental Palmistry starts below the mount of Jupiter in the region of Neptune or passive Mars or nearby. A scrutiny of the two reveals the identity of the both nomenclatures because although in Hindu Puranas Neptune has been described as the Deity of Space but at the same time it has also been described to rule over the oceans etc. Since, it is the significator of deep feelings and the energy derived thereof, therefore its relation with the fixed watery sign Scorpio, the passive field of Mars is quite justified. Here, the activity of Mars is in the depth of mind. Since, Scorpio is the eighth sign of the Zodiac; it signifies death as well as the result of all sensations of the present birth signified by the sign Cancer. An individual soul when departing from the body after death carries with it the accumulated store of all sensations of the present birth in the form of ideas to be manifested in the subsequent births. Therefore, in the next incarnation, the starting point of this is in the region of Neptune or nearby down the mount of Jupiter. Thereafter, it encircles the arena of Moon and moves towards the base of the palm. Since, Moon is the significator of all sensations in the present birth; therefore it is quite justified that this line will encircle the arena of Moon and will gradually proceed downward below the mount of Saturn which is the significator of material conflicts in the present birth. Further, Moon being the source of nutrition, the more is the area covered by the life line round the region of Moon; the more will be the origin of sound health of the native. In the natal chart, the deposition and strength of Moon determine the length of life line and its nature. If Moon be influenced by benefics in the natal chart, the life line will be clear, continuous and devoid of malefic symbols. But if Moon or the watery signs in the natal chart be afflicted by malefics, the life line will be marked with malefic symbols or it may be broken and intersected by small horizontal lines. In some cases, the life line bifurcates above the base of the palm. This signifies change of place of the native at latter ages. In the natal chart, it is reflected by the Moon or the three watery signs viz. fourth, eighth and twelfth signs or houses being influenced by benefics and malefics. A number of spots on this line signify constant mental tension in the entire life. In the natal chart, it is signified by the affliction of Moon or the watery signs by Saturn. Again, Moon being the significator of family and particularly mother, friends, relatives etc. having mental relations, therefore this line and the enclosed region is judged for all domestic affairs.
Now, the other vertical line termed as the fate line is being considered. In Oriental Palmistry, it is termed as practical line or upward line because it is the desire of the Supreme Lord that each individual soul will proceed through continuous material conflicts with the environment for refinement of the self towards the upward target of reunion with the Supreme Soul. Again, in western opinion it is termed as fate line because man creates his own fate by dint of his activities which happens by material interactions with the environment. In the Zodiac, fortune is determined from the ninth sign Saggitarius, the Sattwik, dual and fiery sign of Kshatriya nature represented by the symbol of a being with the lower part horse shaped and the upper part man like having arrows and bow pointing upward which signifies that individual soul crossing over the stage of animalhood acquires manhood and thereafter it determines for sublimation to the super-conscious level and the related interactions to arrive at the target create his fate. Another significance of this line is that the native in whose palm this line exist will have to proceed in life in a predetermined course and such a native will be very conscious about the environment and his responsibility thereto. This line may originate at three places – the base of the palm, the life line and the region of Venus in Oriental Palmistry. In addition, it may also originate from any region adjacent to these three but this will determine the age at which the function of this line will start. If the life line be the point of origin it signifies that the native will be endowed with fortune by somebody outside his own sphere. In the natal chart, the Ascendant, fourth, seventh and tenth houses are termed as angles which are intimately related with the fate of the native in the present birth because the Ascendant signifies the native himself together with his health and original mentality. The fourth house signifies the family, mother, relatives and friends with whom the native is intimately connected. The seventh house signifies the greater environment, the spouse, the business partner while the tenth house signifies job, father etc. Evidently, every individual life is controlled by these factors. In the Zodiac, these are signified by the first sign Aries, the active field of the ruler Mars, the fourth sign Cancer ruled by Moon, the seventh sign Libra, the active field of the ruler of Venus and the tenth sign Capricorn, the passive field of the ruler Saturn.
A fate line starting from the base of the palm signifies the native’s fate to be created by the self i.e. it is related in the natal chart with the Ascendant and/or Mars. Mars signifies the activity, energy, courage, efforts etc. Fate line staring from the life line signifies development with the help of family or close relatives or friends i.e. in such a case the native’s fourth house and/or its lord and/or the Moon sign and/or the sign Cancer will be related with the ninth or the tenth houses in the natal chart. If this line starts from the region of Venus designated in Oriental Palmistry, it signifies development through the spouse or somebody outside his own sphere but related with the greater environment. In such a case, in the natal chart of the native, the ninth or the tenth houses and/or their lords will be related with the seventh house and/or its lord or the sign Libra and/or its lord Venus. If the line starts from the head line or the heart line, improvement of the native will be signified at the corresponding ages and in relation with the person signified by such lines.
An uncut fate line signifies a continuous progress in life which attains its final target without any hindrances but if some horizontal line crosses this line the nature and position of such intersecting line with signify the age and the person obstructing the progress of the individual. In such a natal chart, the ninth and/or the tenth house and/or their lords will be related with malefic planets or houses and/or their lords.
Therefore, it appears that the course of these two vertical lines viz. the fate line and the life line are oppositely directed. The fate line starts from the lower part of the palm with an upward tendency while for the life line it is the reverse the explanations for which are now being provided.
The life line signifies all events related with feelings and sensations which are intimately related with the mind i.e. signified by Moon and the sign Cancer – Tamasik, cardinal watery sign. Moon itself is described as watery planet because of its signifying all liquid which have a natural downward tendency. In accordance with this, the mind also under the influence of complexes tends to draw the consciousness of the native downward in the physical plane for enjoyment of material pleasures signified by Venus. Venus rules over the passive field Taurus and the active field Libra. The sign Cancer ruled by Moon has dual relation with these two signs. The relation with Libra is mutually angular but with respect to Libra Cancer is also the highest Upachaya place. The relation of Cancer with Taurus is mutually Upachaya which signifies that the material desires and the Tamasik nature of the mind mutually increase each other leading to physical and mental deterioration resulting in loss of longevity signified by the downward motion of the life line i.e. this line by nature tends to draw the mentality of the native below the normal level creating bindings in the physical and mental plane.
On the other hand, the fate line starting from the lower part of the palm which signifies the animalhood crosses the field of Moon, Venus, Earth and Mars which are significators of lower complexes terminates at higher point signifying intelligence, dedicated work, self control, wisdom etc. If this line tends to the field of Mercury it will take the native at higher level of intelligence. If its course is towards the field of Sun, it will award the native with an artistic mentality and the related activities. If it tends to the region of Saturn, it will signify material success without any attachment whereas the course towards the region of Jupiter takes the native at a very high level of knowledge and wisdom whereby the native will exhibit a parade of fame and wealth. Therefore, it is very natural that the fate line should start from the lower part of the palm and its terminating point signifies the achievement determined by the nature of the region where it ends.
Now, the relation between the course of this line with the natal chart is analyzed. In the natal chart, the ninth house signifies fortune which in the Zodiac is the sign Saggitarius – Sattwik, dual and fiery sign ruled by Jupiter of which it is the active field. The three angular signs with respect to Saggitarius are Pisces, Gemini and Virgo. All these four signs are Sattwik and mutual in nature but represent four different elements signifying the four planes of consciousness. Of these, Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury. Gemini signifies Sattwik inquisitiveness and scientific outlook while Virgo signifies Sattwik inspirations of work, practical senses and development of related intelligence. As such, the fate line signifying the consciousness if heading to the field of Mercury signifies the manifestation in the plane of intelligence. Opposite of this is situated the sign Pisces, the significator of highest level of consciousness leading to freedom from complexes i.e. Moksha. In accordance with this, the region of Mercury lies in completely opposite position on the heart line in Western Palmistry or the line of consciousness in the Oriental Palmistry. Therefore, a fate line heading to the field of Jupiter signifies attainment of the native at the highest level of consciousness. For this change over from the level of intelligence to the level of wisdom are absolutely required the dedicated work without persona attachment and guided by intelligence and wisdom both. It is indicated by the third sign signifying strength counted from Gemini and the twelfth sign signifying conscious creativity free from material complexes i.e. the sign Leo ruled by the Sun and its just opposite sign Aquarius, the Rajasik, fixed and active airy sign ruled by the hermit planet Saturn. After Aquarius is situated the last sign Pisces where the individual soul being freed from all complexes remains in union with the Supreme Soul. Therefore, a fate line heading towards the region of Sun signifies fame, establishment through creative activities and when tending to the region of Saturn signifies controlled and disciplined material activities resulting in sublimation of the soul to the higher level of consciousness. Therefore, the relation of the course of the fate line with the different signs of the Zodiac and their significance is quite justified.

Significance of the position and nature of the fate line in the palm

One of the chief lines in a palm is the upward line or fate line as termed in Western Palmistry and the practical line in Oriental Palmistry; all these three terms have significance. Since the line starts from some region at the bottom of the palm with an upward tendency to any of the four fingers excluding the thumb or the adjacent regions thereof; it is designated as upward line. It has an inner significance also in that this line signifies the gradual progress of the native towards establishment in earthly life and therefore it is termed as practical line also and in Western Palmistry it is designated as fate line because the significance of this line is mostly related with the material prospect or degradation. But it should be noted in particular that in many cases no upward line exists at all in the palm although such natives are quite established in life. On the contrary, many palms are observed having this line where material prospects of the native are very little or not at all. This implies that material prospect in life is not strictly related with its existence in the palm.
The real significance of this line is that the life of such a native having this line in the palm is directed in a definite course by some unseen force and the human efforts of the native to deviate from this course are not fruitful. It means that for such a native the fate or fortune is the real controller and not human efforts termed as “Purushokar”. Secondly, such a native becomes very conscious about the environment and responsible towards the same which is not usually seen with the natives not having this line in the palm. If this line be weak or defective, its consequence in the native’s life is usually obstructive leading to downfall and for natives having this line absent in the palm but containing malefic signs, human like qualities are usually absent and instead demonic features are manifested and the native not having this line in the palm will have to construct the own fate with the help of activities.
Now, these characteristics of the fate line are being analyzed in terms of astrological principles.
In the natal chart, the ninth house signifies fortune, wisdom, conscience, religion etc. In the Zodiac, it is the sign Saggitarius – dual and Sattwik fiery sign ruled by Jupiter, the Master of the Deities of whom it is the active field and the sign of debilation for the demon Rahu. The ninth house is the origin of the Ascendant signifying the start of present incarnation which implies that the origin of life or the driving force is religion, conscience etc. which are actually the significators of fortune. For a native, establishment in life and his neighbours are judged from the third house while the relation with the greater environment is judged from the seventh house. Ninth house is the seventh house counted from the third house and conversely it is the third house counted from the seventh house in the natal chart. It implies that the fate of the native is closely related with the nearby neighbours and the greater environment. The consequence of the seventh house is the eleventh house and the eleventh counted from the eleventh house is the ninth house. Its implication is that the financial success of a native is intimately related with the development of the environment and this financial success is the significator of the native’s fortune. The characteristics of the ninth sign in the Zodiac i.e. Saggitarius with the inner significance of its symbol indicate that the actual fortune is intimately related with the sublimation of consciousness together with the sense of responsibility to the society or entire environment as a whole.
But if the ninth house in the natal chart or the sign Saggitarius in the Zodiac be weak or afflicted by malefics, the native will not receive the gift of fortune much in life because fortune is actually the accumulated results of the deeds in previous incarnations. In such a case, the native’s accumulation in previous births being mostly exhausted, he has to depend mostly on his personal efforts in the present incarnation which is termed as “purushokar”. In such a case, depending on the personal efforts and activities, the native may rise to a high position both financially and socially starting from almost zero-point in life.
As such, such a native has to combat with the environment constantly for being established in life. This results in the lack of sense of responsibility and duty to the environment. This is reflected in the native’s palm by the absence of the fate line or the presence of very faint and defective fate line. If the ninth house in a natal chart be weak or afflicted by malefics, the native is mostly devoid of religious sense, conscience etc. In addition, if the Ascendant and/or its lord, the fourth house and/or its lord together with the Moon be weak or afflicted by malefics, the native will have a very mean mentality and selfishness as well. As the consequence, in such a native demonic features are mostly manifested instead of humanic qualities and this will be extremely harmful for the environment and consequently to the native himself.

Justification for the nomenclature of the line designated as Girdle of Venus in a palm

A minor line in palm is “Girdle of Venus” although it is not found in all palms. The line starts from the middle of the mounts of Jupiter and Saturn and is usually extended through the fields of Saturn and Sun and ends in the middle of the mounts of Sun and Mercury in the palm. In some cases, the line is extended from the mount of Jupiter and ends in the mount of Mercury above the line of heart as termed in Western Palmistry. Regarding the effect of this line, different opinions have been made by eminent palmists. If the line be unbroken or not intersected by any other line and at the same time continuous and not very thick or faint, the native will be endowed with self-control, warmth of heart etc; otherwise loss of control, bad habits like masturbation, bad character, neurological troubles and hysteria will be the result. But the most important question is about the nomenclature of this line because it is in no way related with the field of Venus in its course according to both oriental and western system. In this matter doubt has been expressed by the eminent scholar Shree Jyoti Bachaspati in his research oriented works “Hat Dekha”. The subject of concern of this article is justification of this nomenclature in terms of Astrology.
In the planetary kingdom of our solar system, Venus is the significator of material desires, fine arts, literature, applied sciences, love, romance, lust, creation of new body as the result of the destruction of the old one etc. According to Hindu Mythology, the Master of the Demons i.e. Venus teaches his disciples the lessons of material enjoyments but the source of immortality is beyond his knowledge although he knows the mechanism of creation of new life by the destruction of an old one, a discipline combined of chemistry and biology. But this knowledge is beyond the reach of the Master of the Deities i.e. Jupiter who, however, has the knowledge of immortality in all mortal living and non-living beings. According to Greek Mythology, Venus is the goddess of beauty and therefore is the representative of all beauteous things in the world.
In the planetary kingdom as classified in Astrology, Venus belongs to the destructive group together with waning Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Rahu while in the creative group are included Sun, waxing Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Ketu. It is to be noted in particular that Venus gets debilated in Virgo, the sign ruled by its friend Mercury, but becomes exalted in Pisces, the sign owned by its enemy Jupiter. Virgo is the sixth sign in the Zodiac of Sattwik, dual and earthy nature ruled by Mercury which is also the sign of exaltation for the lord. The sixth house signifies enemies in the external world as also in the human nature itself expressed as the six complexes which induce an individual in worldly activities. However, the sign being Sattwik and earthy in nature manifesting the characteristics of Mercury viz. rationality, practical senses, analytical mindedness etc., it can not provide an individual with uncontrolled sensual desires. Therefore, in a normal case, Venus is unable to express its bad effects i.e. it is weak in this sign but if it be afflicted by malefics, its Sattwik senses and rationality will yield to uncontrolled sensual desires thereby finding way for debilated Venus to extend its evil effects. On the other hand, the twelfth sign in the Zodiac is Pisces which is Sattwik, dual and watery in nature as well as the passive field of the ruler Jupiter. The twelfth sign being the seventh sign counted from the sixth sign Virgo signifies the detriment of sensual desires which actually means that the native being freed from complexes reaches its ultimate goal by reuniting with the Supreme Soul. The twelfth house also signifies sacrifice, expenditures for others etc. and as such it is classified as “Paratantra’ meaning one which is influenced by others. Since Venus is exalted in this sign, it gives its best results here through the sacrifices of accumulated wealth for the good of others and thereby gets rid of the complexes and reunites with the Supreme Soul. This has been expressed by the sages of Hindu Upanishad as “enjoy through sacrifices”.
Therefore, it appears that in human life, the signs Virgo and Pisces are intimately associated with the function of Venus. Therefore, in the palm the relation of the line connecting the mounts of Jupiter and Mercury in respect of the function of Venus is very clear. Again, in the Zodiac, on one side of the line connecting the signs Virgo and Pisces are the two signs ruled by Saturn viz. Capricorn and Aquarius and on the other side just opposite to these are the signs Cancer and Leo respectively ruled by Moon and Sun. During night time in absence of the Sun, Moon functions in many ways like the Sun so far as terrestrial phenomena are concerned. As such, in most of the palms having the “Girdle of Venus” it is seen that this line starting from the middle of the mounts of the Jupiter and Saturn ends in the middle of the mounts of Sun and Mercury. If this line be unbroken, not-intersected or devoid of any malefic symbol, the native will enjoy the good effects of Venus through the entire life whereby he will gradually crossing over the physical level rise up to the higher spiritual world wherein the Divine Love will be realized. In such a native, artistic activities of very high level will be manifested and he will have the characteristics of doing the good for others. Since, Venus is actually characterized by the warmth of pure love, social outlook and cordiality, polished intelligence and intellectual wisdom, therefore it is natural that this line will function as a sister line for the heart line as designated in Western Palmistry. Therefore, the position of this line is quite in harmony with the corresponding astrological criteria.
Saturn is characterized by loneliness, reluctance to project the self in the external world etc. Therefore, for a relation between Venus and Saturn by deposition or aspect in the natal chart, the native will feel hesitation to express the earthly love or romance and even not at all. In such a situation, the native will try abnormal processes like masturbation for sensual pleasures. For a relation between Moon and Venus, the native will always seek for female contacts while for relation between Sun and Venus; the native may be deviated from morality in character leading to social defamation, health break, neurological problems etc. In such a case, for a relation with the Sun the native may become a patient of hysteria even. In keeping with this, the “Girdle of Venus” if broken or intersected, the disease related to the field of such break or intersection will be developed in the native in course of time.
Therefore, it is seen that although the line termed as the “Girdle of Venus” is in no way connected with the field of Venus on the palm described either in oriental or in western language, yet it is related with the field of Venus in oriental or western system viz. the sign of exaltation i.e. Pisces and with the field of Mercury designated as the sign of debilation for Venus remaining above usually the heart line on the palm and through this line the different traits of Venus as described in Astrology are manifested. Again, when broken or intersected by any line, the functions of this line related with the mounts of the planets on the palm are connected. Therefore, it may be concluded in fine that this nomenclature as “Girdle of Venus” is quite justified.
